Jackfruit is the new favorite in meat alternatives! And with good reason! Its meaty texture makes it perfect for dishes like tacos, stews, sandwiches, and salads. Here, we are doing it the BBQ way, on a nice baguette. The texture is perfect and the taste… Well, you’ll have to try it! But this is something that is definitely worth a try! And if you haven’t tried jackfruit yet, this recipe is the perfect introduction! Only make sure you buy jackfruit in brine (or water), not in syrup.

For the BBQ Sauce

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/2 onion, finely diced
  • 1 clove garlic, peeled and cut in half
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 can of tomato paste
  • 1-2 tablespoons molasses (depending on how sweet you like your BBQ sauce)
  • 2-3 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoon Dijon mustard

In a medium saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic. Sauté for about 6-7 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients, except the mustard, and cook for about 20-25 minutes, over low heat, stirring occasionally. Add the mustard and taste. Adjust seasonings.

For the Jackfruit

  • 1 20-oz can jackfruit in brine
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 onion, finely diced
  • 1 clove garlic, peeled and cut in half
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 cup mushroom broth from dehydrated mushrooms (or mushroom stems)
  • Additional salt and pepper, to taste

Preheat the oven to 400˚F. Drain and rinse the jackfruit. Cut out the tough inner core. Transfer the fruit to a large bowl and mix in the brown sugar, smoked paprika, black pepper, and chili powder.

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and the garlic, and sauté until the onion is translucent, 4-5 minutes. Remove the garlic clove halves and discard. Add the jackfruit to the skillet and cook, stirring, until the jackfruit begins to brown, about 3-4 minutes.

Add the mushroom broth and 3/4 of the BBQ sauce. Reduce the heat and simmer until sauce has thickened about 20 minutes. Stir to break the jackfruit apart as it softens. Transfer the jackfruit to a baking dish and transfer to the oven to brown for about 10 minutes.

Shred the jackfruit with forks and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve on baguette, or any other roll you like. Top with your favorite toppings, like tomato, lettuce, red onion, cilantro. Serve with the rest of the BBQ sauce. Bon appétit!
